3 European US Allies Give Thumbs Up To Palestine UN Statehood

US & GLOBAL: This week, three US allies engaging in a decision in regard to the prospective statehood of Palestine, on Wednesday, voted in favor of the approval of Palestine. UN officials representing the nation of Ireland, Norway and Spain are the three European allies of the United States that agreed that each would formally recognize Palestine state. By Anne M. Erbynstein In the most recent moments of debate and an apparent vote concerning the status of the nation of Palestine in regard to the Palestine government's applied for statehood, the three approving nations would vote to include Palestine as a full state and, as a matter of protocol, the three states are set to approve of Palestine on May 28 when a final decision is made during the UN General Assembly.

The United Nations General Assembly recently voted by a wide margin to grant new “rights and privileges” to Palestine and called on the Security Council to reconsider Palestine’s request to become the 194th member of the United Nations. The resolution was approved with a vote of 143-9, with 25 abstentions.

The United States, along with Israel, Argentina, Czechia, Hungary, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, and Papua New Guinea, voted against it. While this decision enhances Palestine’s rights within the UN, it reaffirms that Palestine remains a non-member observer state without the right to vote in the General Assembly or its conferences.

The United States has made it clear that it will block Palestinian membership and statehood until direct negotiations with Israel resolve key issues, including security, boundaries, and the future of Jerusalem.

As for the European Union, its member states were divided in their vote when the UN General Assembly recognized Palestine as a non-member observer state in 2012.

Fourteen member states voted in favor, 13 abstained, and the Czech Republic voted against it. So, while the UN has taken steps to grant Palestine new rights, the final decision on membership still rests with the UN Security Council.
