STATE & NATIONAL: In the city of New York, Mayor Eric Adams continues to focus on matters associated with the massive influx of illegal immigrants--those who, now, fill the spaces of a number of New York city shelters. While the matter of providing for the scores of immigrants that, in some areas of the city, totals reach beyond 8,233, Mayor Adams is faced with imposing proposed action; such strategic scrutiny that has received unsatisfactory critiques from others. By Michelle Crawford-Sapenter "We are , simply, out of space and resources to continue tens of thousands of migrants indefinitely as hundreds more continue to enter our care every single day."-- New York City Council member Gale Brewer, 6th District In New York City, Mayor Eric Adams works around policies associated with illegal immigrants, many of which will see a number of the S. American migrants out of a roof over their heads. According to Mayor Adams' recent report, there exists a shelter police surrounding the city's response to immigrants. The Mayor reports that the policy would limit the time span that an immigrant will be provided shelter. According to the policy, the distinctions that are made in time limits are associated with age. Immigrants who are age 23 and under are limited to a 30 day stay in one shelter. Those who are under 23 are given 60 days to remain sheltered in one place. According to today's report, a number of the immigrants are able to transfer between shelters and by doing so, are able to remain housed for extended time periods provided there is room and the families are able to continue their transfers. Some of the ongoing problems involve the fact that, among the more than 8,200 families are 678 minors that, despite their being able to maintain housing in one place, the risks become increasing p[ossible that children may be separated from their parents. Adding to the difficulty faced by Mayor Adams and members of the city council. is the situation surrounding schooling and attendance by immigrant school age children. According to New York's report, there are 5700 students among the 8233 sheltered immigrants. Schools in New York have received the enrollment of illegal immigrants, however, now report that more than 18% among 1,026 students are not enrolled in public school system. Also, students among immigrants may be forced to find transportation while school buses remain out of circulation and students are not being transported to and from school. One council member stated that school buses are not showing up and MetroCards have run out as family members are no longer supplied with free bus fare cards. City Council members have indicated that there has been an extensive effort aimed at assisting immigrants in the last year adding, however, that the city is limited in regard to the tools that are necessary to sustain the immigrants for periods that surpass the 30 and 60 day policy. According to recent reports, the city of New York is speculating on making drastic changes, however, such changes that may find immigrants housed with more permanence and situated in separate, private dwellings. Mayor Adams is expected to correspond with concerned individuals and organizations on matters associated with locating permanent placing for some 8,233 immigrants currently housed in New York shelters.
