Updated: Apr 19

NATION: On Thursday, US Vice President Kamala Harris met with a pregnant mother to be. She, the pregnant woman happens, also, to be a doctor in the Georgia medical system. The doctor has performed abortions, such that she, now, states have been impacted by abortion bans. By Michelle Crawford-Sapenter "Nurses and doctors face up to 10 years in prison for providing abortion care in Georgia. It does not have to be this way." --Vice President Kamala Harris Vice President Harris met with Dr. Mehgan Cohen of Savannah, Georgia. Dr Cohen spoke in regard to the anxiety that is, now, felt by doctors of long standing and those who are interns "coming into residency..." Dr Cohen mentioned the fact that , in the past, doctors were never concerned about the idea that they could actually be criminalized for treating an abortion patient.

Months ago, Vice President Harris met in Nevada with doctors and others in states across the nation discussing the status of abortion where matters have developed in regard to the laws surrounding punishment for doctors and nurses who perform abortion or provide treatment to women who have had an abortion. Today, the anxiety is felt by medical professionals, OBGyn doctors and patients who are seeking treatment--the threat of being criminalized is cause for doctors having 2nd thoughts about treating women who desire an abortion

Supporters of abortion bans often believe that life begins at conception. They consider a fertilized egg or embryo to be a human life with inherent rights. From this perspective, abortion is seen as taking a life, and banning it is essential to protect the rights of the unborn.

Many people’s religious or moral convictions lead them to oppose abortion. They view it as morally wrong and incompatible with their faith.  Abortion bans are often supported by religious groups and individuals who believe in the sanctity of life. Some argue that abortion bans protect pregnant individuals from potential physical and emotional harm.

They believe that carrying a pregnancy to term is generally safer than undergoing an abortion procedure. Advocates for reproductive rights emphasize a person’s autonomy over their own body. They argue that individuals should have the right to make decisions about their reproductive health without government interference.

Abortion bans are seen as violating this autonomy and infringing on privacy rights. Banning abortion doesn’t eliminate the need for it. When abortion is illegal, unsafe and clandestine procedures can occur, risking the health and lives of pregnant individuals. Legal abortion allows for proper medical supervision and safer procedures.

Exceptions for Cases of Rape, Critics of abortion bans highlight the importance of exceptions. They argue that bans should allow for cases of rape, incest, and when the pregnant person’s health is at risk.

Without these exceptions, individuals facing such circumstances may suffer physically, emotionally, and psychologically.  Abortion bans disproportionately affect low-income individuals who may lack resources for prenatal care, child-rearing, and support.  Advocates for choice argue that everyone should have the right to make informed decisions based on their unique circumstances.

Vice President Harris commented in reference to the laws that would, not prosecute doctors and nurses and imprison them for 10 years for performing medically for women in need of abortion stating, the laws are “…cruel and unfair.”
