Texas: Transgender Students Given Thumbs Up in School Performing


STATE & NATIONAL: This week , following the plan by Texas school board to ban transgender students in Sherman school district, the district made a final decision to move forward with permitting trans student the freedom to participate school in performing arts. The decision made by the district board of directors stemmed from the support received from the community which stated their approval of the student's hope. By Anne M. Erbynstein In America, a majority of more than 50% of the public agree that transgenders should be free to exercise the same rights as every other American citizen. The plan for imposing restrictions on minor students, possibly meant to reflect upon their behavior as a deterrent, has been perceived by many as a dorm of discrimination. Allowing transgender participation in UIL competition is a perception that had not been alien from schools across the nation. In Texas, trans students have, however won the victory. After having received bot complaints and compliments from the residents of Sherman, Texas, officials at the district level determined the need for recognizing the rights and liberties of transgender students. In one situation, it was the performance by a number of trans students that significantly persuaded district officials to reverse their former ban on transgender participation in school performing arts. During the production ofthe stage play, 'Oklahoma" it happened that the imposed ban resulted in forcing 20 students to lose their parts in the play, the school district made careful examination of the former ban decision. The community of Sherman, Texas became livid, reaching the school and the district with their complaints. According to reports made from Sherman, Texas middle school, the Oklahoma production was shut down after such time there were not a sufficient enough number of male actors to fill the roles of male characters. Complaints made by 60 residents to the board by students, parents and others within the community, located near Dalas, Texas, provided essential amount of ban opposition to cause the school board to change their decision. The one student, a transgender portraying one of the play's major roles was among the 20 who received rave reviews and was, thereafter, permitted to participate in the performance of the nationally renowned stage production, 'Oklahoma.' The reversal of the ban was perceived as being the most democratic decision made by the Sherman Independent School District officials while as much as 73% of Democrats across the nation uphold the rights and freedom of others regardless of race, color, creed, religion or national origin.
