Biden States Plans For Following Through w/ Morehouse Commencement Speech In Lieu of Anti-Palestine Grumblings


POLITICS: Announced last week, US President Joe Biden stated plans for delivering the commencement speech to graduating seniors at the largely black, men's college, Morehouse.  Today, some antagonistic grumbling is said to have emanated from members of the student body and others criticizing Biden's policy involving.  While the consensus among Morehouse students does not reflect the belief that the White House harbors and anti-Palestine policy, among those who question the administration's decisions, they would be faced with responding to the question of whether Israel has the right to defend itself—after all, October 7th landed upon Israel with 2000 missiles that took Israel by surprise and killed 1200 Israeli's  By Michelle Crawford-Sapenter President Joe Biden’s Israel policy has been a subject of criticism from various quarters.  Critics argue that Biden’s administration demonstrates a double standard in its foreign policy by giving Israel impunity, while, however, Biden made several assertions to Israel in regard to Netanyahu's requirement for protecting the Palestinian people, freeing hostages calling for a ceasefire that would assist with deliveries of humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.  


Comments , today, describe Biden’s strategy towards Israel as ineffective, however, there has been minimal internal dissent within the State Department, by staffers stated in regard to the President's handling of the Israel-Hamas war.  

While questions have surfaced surrounding the extent of Israel’s right to self-defense, it’s a complex issue with varied opinions.  Some affirm Israel’s right to self-defense, especially in the face of attacks.  Others argue that the right to self-defense does not apply when the state is effectively controlling the territory, as is the case with Israel and Gaza.  Issues have, also, been raised concerning the proportionality of Israel’s response.


There are debates about the interpretation of international law, particularly Article 51 of the UN Charter, which deals with the right to self-defense.


The White House has, however, indicated that President Biden has no plan for redirecting his commencement speaking engagements indicating that the President will speak at Morehouse College on May 19, 2024.

Today, at Morehouse and among student at colleges and universities across the nation, there are complex issues surrounding the war between Israel and Hamas and a wide range of perspectives, such that US students have continued to conduct protest as a testament to their demonstrated concern. While public opinion is not one sided, it is quite clearly racially motivated with Palestinian students making a clear effort at gaining the full support and sympathies of the US--the element of support and sympathetic expression that the Biden administration has expressed for both sides in the ongoing conflict. There is no consensus that universally applies to all situations or viewpoints.
