STATE & NATIONAL: This week, Texas Governor Gregg Abbott states his decided opposition in regard to gender identity distinctions --a statute that Biden indicates the administration will be expanding. While the law already exists in the state of Texas, Abbott vehemently opposed to its expansion.

Today, Governor Greg Abbott’s opposition to the expansion of gender identity distinctions appears to be rooted in his belief that the changes do not align with his interpretation of Title IX and his views on gender norms.
The Biden administration recently revised the rules for Title IX, a civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination at federally funded colleges and K-12 schools. The new rules, set to go into effect in August, redefine sex discrimination and sex-based harassment to prevent misconduct based on sex stereotypes, pregnancy, gender identity, and sexual orientation.
However, Governor Abbott has ordered the Texas Education Agency to sidestep the Biden administration rule. Abbott argued against Biden's order and stated his position the same day Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued the Biden administration to block the Title IX changes.
Governor Abbott has suggested that Texas public school teachers should be barred from wearing clothes that don’t conform to traditional gender norms. The Governor made these remarks while recounting the story of a male teacher in North Texas who wore a pink dress for his school’s spirit day.
These actions and statements suggest that Governor Abbott’s opposition to the expansion of gender identity distinctions is based on his interpretation of Title IX and his views on gender norms. However, it’s important to note that these are complex and sensitive issues with varying opinions and legal interpretations.
