Gantz Threatens Leaving War Cabinet & Netanyahu War Zealots

Updated: May 18

US & GLOBAL: The situation within Israel’s war cabinet has indeed become tense. Benny Gantz, a centrist member of the three-member War Cabinet, has threatened to resign from the government if a new plan for the war in Gaza is not adopted by June.

Gantz, Israel’s Defense Minister, has developed a six-point plan that includes the return of hostages, ending Hamas’ rule.

Today, as Prime Minister Netanyahu reins in members of an outside militia, the prospect established by Gantz that would involve the demilitarization of the Gaza strip, and establishing an international administration of civilian affairs appears to be an impossibility.

Should he move forward with his considered resignation, Gantz’s departure would leave Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu more reliant on his far-right allies, who advocate for a hard-line approach.

What is left to be seen, however, is whether this internal strife will impact Israel’s chances of defeating Hamas.

Demilitarizing Gaza would require dismantling Hamas’s military wing, a goal that has proven elusive after 225 days of fighting.

Netanyahu faces growing pressure from various fronts, including the U.S., which has warned against further offensive actions in Gaza due to the humanitarian crisis and civilian casualties.

The hope for the war’s end does not appear to be looming on the near horizon while the prospect for changes to occur following a leave by Gantz remain in question.
