City of Houston, Harris & 3 Additional Counties enter Into Recovery Mode Following Deadly Storm, 5 Dead

STATE & NATIONAL: Today, 800,000 homes and commercial structures are left without electrical power. On Thursday, 5 people suffered fatal injuries following a major disaster that ripped through the 200 mile radius of Harris county. Recovery from the midweek event is being conducted as residents in the city of Houston and surrounding area continue to sift through the rubble. By Michelle Crawford-Sapenter

The city of Houston was rocked by a massive hurricane on Thursday. The week’s major storm is the second to hit the 4million population city in 2 weeks.

The local authorities are taking steps to respond to every matter at issue. Houston City Manager, Judge, Lina Hidalgo, has signed a disaster declaration stating that the U.S. federal government has responded to Harris county. Hidalgo stated that direct grants and also SBA loans will soon be made available to the city and resident in Houston/Harris county.


Mayor Whittier spoke in regard to the ongoing emergency as investigation of the matter continues. The city has been placed on minimal travel alert while 2500 traffics lights remain out along with nearly 1million residents and business centers.


Mayor. stated that Center Point will assist with the restoration of electricity such that has been indicated that a recovery may extend to days or even weeks before all power is resumed.


No power, the Mayor States, means that residents remain without burglar alarms. Mayor Whitemire issues warnings to “ bad guys, … don’t even try it.”


Houston officials and investigators will continue to make an assessment of the disaster as the city officials make a full determination of the extent of damages. Today, Mayor Whitmire stated that the city is not on boil water alert adding that the water system is fully operable and there is, at this time, no sign of contamination.
