Denver Resolves Its Tent City Problem Paying Rents For 300 Illegal Migrants

STATE & NATIONAL: In Denver ,Colo., a tent city camp was disrupted by local authorities. Several hundred undocumented migrants were forced to evacuate their tents after having been evicted by the city authorities. Tent dwellers who had their tents stretched along sidewalks near Jefferson Park were evacuated when police and city officials arrived in the area--tent residents suspected they would be arrested. By Anne M. Erbynstein "We can’t do this necessarily forever. It’s just not going to work. We can’t provide indefinite shelter period." In regard to the direct assistance provided the tent city dwellers, Jon Ewing, spokesperson for Denver Human Services, stated that the help will not be provided forever. Ewing indicated that the city will, however continue to work with the undocumented migrants

Several hundred tent city dwellers ran away from their tents located at Zuni Street and Speer Boulevard in Denver's northwest side while local police and city authorities issued warnings indicating that all tents would be removed without the consent of the owner. Later in the day, tent dwellers were provided a sleep cell in two shelters that were opened by the Denver city department. According to the report, city officials took steps to open the shelters to tent dwellers for 30 days with the possibility of extending the stay period. Additional assistance has been provided to the tent city residents given the steps that were taken by city officials secure the housing applications of 300 or more tent dwellers. The decision made by the city department will provide the city with a renewed measure of cleanliness along the several street blocks that had been used as the camping grounds for illegal migrants for several months during 2023. Denver Human Services official stated, on Wednesday, that the department will pay the first month's rent for the 320 undocumented tent dwellers. The rents and utilities will be paid as a result of a charitable 330,000 dollar fund provided by the department. Today nearly 30% of the tent dwellers have already been approved for being housed.
