Former Arizona Corrections Director Receives Postponement in Sentencing Trial -Ryan Charged w/Firing A Shot At Police Officers

STATE & NATIONAL: Today, in the state of Arizona, the former corrections officer, Charles Ryan, received a postponement in the trial that would finalize the () year old's sentencing. In 2022, Ryan was charged with the crime of disorderly conduct involving an armed weapon standoff. Ryan was charged after aiming a firearm at 2 police officers. By Anne M. Erbynstein "There's potential health or mental health issues that go along with a person being that age. We don't know … it's possible that he's suffering from early stages of dementia. It's possible he has other health issues."--Russ Richelsoph, Arizona Department of corrections Attorney

On Thursday, an Arizona court judge ruled against imposing sentencing on Charles Ryan in regard to the matter associated with his 2022 trail pleading of no contest. Ryan had been charged following a situation that developed at his home in Tempe, Arizona. According to the charges filed police officers arrived at the home of the former corrections director in response to a matter involving Ryan and an injury to his hand. According to Ryan's report, on January 6, 2022, the 73 year old sustained a gun shot injury to his hand after having been fired upon by the officers. The shot heard from inside the Ryan home, the former Corrections Directors stated, was that fired by one ofthe officers.

The matter, however remaining ambiguous, finds that charges were brought against Ryan and no charges were filed against the police officers. It remains uncertain the reason police officers arrived at Ryan's home, however, the police report states that Ryan was shot in the hand after he pointed his weapon at the officers following the matter brought police to the former officer's home. Arriving at the Ryan home appears to be associated with a possible welfare check. The report made by police indicated that Ryan's speech was slurred after he had consumed a high volume of Tequila. The police report also states that Ryan sustained a superficial flesh wound after a bullet fired from his weapon ricocheted off of a porcelain wall in the bathroom striking Ryan in the forehead. The Arizona court has indicated that the sentencing trial will be held in latter 2024. The Judge presiding over the case has indicated that the next phase of the trial will be held separate from the former case brought against Charles Ryan.
