House Passes Short Term Spending Bill To Prevent A Government Shutdown

NATION: In a vote that resulted in preventing the government shutdown, the US House was led by Mike Johnson in the approval of a short-term bill to cover government expenditures for the year 2024. The 320- 99 vote would elect to enforce a stop-gap that would prevent the shutdown, keeping the doors ofthe government open beyond the March 1st deadline. By Michelle Crawford-Sapenter During a gathering of officials from both sides of the aisle, a deal was struck on portions of the appropriations bill. Lawmakers arrived at an agreement on Wednesday and, together, Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell, House Speaker, Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries approved of six bills that were passed in a stop-gap measure that would prevent a shutdown. While it is necessary for a fiscal budget to be approved by the Congress, the House may set its own schedule or date that the full-budget approval may completed. Given the short -term approval of the President's bill, it remains uncertain how long Congress will extend the full approval of the 2024 spending bill which is expected , each year, to begin on October 1st. The full approval of the government spending bill, being postponed by the House through a routine process must, however, be reconciled by June 15 in the same year that President Biden presented the full budget proposal which was presented by the white House, arriving in the House in the first week of February. In the situation involving the House vote, the matter of a break down in party voting took center stage and determined how the House would ultimately decide on the six bills approved by the Senate and House officials. As a matter of the democratic process, there were 97 voyes by Republicans that disparaged the House ability to cut down the short term bill which was determied in the best interest of Democrats.

Today, however, the short term approval does not seem to completely satisfy the budge proposal decisions submitted by President Biden while Johnson continues to wield the House gavel and insist on the stop-gap method of fiscal budget approval.
