STATE & NATIONAL: Today, the Washington D.C. Zoo announces the return of the Giant Panda. Twenty years ago, the Washington D.C. Zoo was well known for its Panda Bear population that included the 3 bears mother, Mei Ziang. father Tian Tian and baby Panda bear, Xiao QiJi. Two of China's baby Giant Panda will be sent to the Washington D.C. National Zoo.
By Anne M. Erbynstein "Pandas are returning to DC! The Congress woman stated that the Smithsonian National Panda Zoo "...will welcome a new pair of giant pandas who'll be here for 10 years." The family of Giant Pandas were removed from the Washington National Zoo due to the expiration of a previous agreement. The three Giant Pandas were on loan from China for a research and breeding program. After the agreement ended, they were returned to China.
The end of the contract with China's zoo left D.C. without Pandas for the first time in over two decades. However, the zoo has announced that two new pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao, will be arriving by the end of the year.
These pandas were also born at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. The return of the pandas is expected to reignite the city’s love for these adorable creatures. Residents in the city of the District of Columbia have expressed their excitement over the return of the Pandas to the National Panda Zoo. Recently, Eleanor Holmes expressed her gladness after learning about the return of the Pandas. Homles, a member US Congressional statehood, commented in regard to the Pandas' return stating, "The Smithsonian's National indicating that the former Panda's were removed in October. The last two were sent back to China after the agreement to keep them in the US ended in October.
