Jewish-Hamas Conflict Stirs US Acrimony-DHS' Mayorkas Reacts To Hawley's Unconcientious Remarks

STATE & NATIONAL: US Homeland Security Secretary mayorkas lands a number of very sternly placed poinant and

in his comments which thrashed against the tone set by Senator Josh Hawley during a recent hearing involving the DHS response to the Israel-Hamas conflict. By Anne M. Erbynstein "Number one, what I found despicable of this language--purely odious, counld be emblematic of the sentiments of the 260,000 men and women of the DHS. Number 2, Senator Hawley takes an adversarial approach to me in this question and ...perhaps he don't know my own background, Mayorkas commented. Perhaps you don't know that I am the child of a Holocaust survivor...Perhaps he does not know that my mother lost all of her family at the hands ofthe Nazis."

Secretary Mayorkas stated , while appearing to withhold emotion, that he finds the tone of Hawleys questioning to be "...entirely misplaced." Mayorkas stated that he finds Hawley's rather less than salient remarks to be dispicable, adding, "I donot expectand apology." Hawley questioned Mayorkas following the viewing of a video filmed of a DHS employee who flew over Israel a glider baring on its exterior, "Free Palestine." Hawley proceeded with comments stating that he believes Mayorkas' performance is despicable.

According to the report made immediately following the receipt of information surrounding the actions taken by the DHS employee, Secretary Mayorkas was asked whether he fired the employee. The US DHS Secretary stated, " he was placed on administraive leave." Today, the climactic and , yet, volatile reaction to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict has set off actions of antisemitism and reactions by American Jews and Muslims whose temperaments have been inflamed and inflated over the news of the war and the injuury and deaths of those who remain in the Israel-Gaza regios. In each instance, as lives have been lost, the likelihood of the losses being relative to US Jews and Muslims grows increasingly possible. The saddest response to the conflict in Israel is the unresolve attitudes to the hope for peace within the United States among, both, Jewish and Muslim Americans.
