Updated: May 27

STATE & NATIONAL: IN a New Mexico court, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer denied a bid put forth by actor Alec Baldwin who requested a dismissal of the charges involving the shooting death of cinematographer, Haley Hutchins. The shooting that transpired on the set of the film "Rust" was stated by Baldwin as an accident, however, charges filed against Balwin have been sustained by the court as prosecutors file involuntary manslaughter charges. By Anne M. Erbynstein "[M]otion to dismiss is, hereby, denied." The comment made to Baldwin and his legal team following the plea for dismissal. On the set of the film production, "Rust," in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Alec Baldwin was filming a scene as the film's armorer, Hannah Guiterrez-Reed and Haley Hutchins in October, 2021. According to the first reports, Balwin received the weapon from Guiterrez-Reed shortly prior to the scene being filmed. Receiving the firearm, Baldwin' s weapons discharged injuring the film's director, Joel Souza. Baldwin later stated to police that he had not fired the weapon that struck and fatally injured 42 year old Hutchins. The trial involving Guiterrez-Reed was decided in a guilty verdict, Guiterrez-Reed was convicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter. This weekend, Baldwin entered a plea of not guilty, subsequently, being denied the actor's petitioned to the court for a dismissal of the case. Judge Sommers stated in a 25 page ruling that there was no evidence that the plea entered by Baldwin's legal team was valid. Sommers stated that according to the claims made by the defense stating that the prosecution acted in "bad faith" the Judge indicated that there was nothing to corroborate the defense' claims. As the trial proceeds, Balwin is set to return to court for the conclusion of his involuntary manslaughter charge this summer.
