Texas Governor Gregg Abbott Declares Disaster in Storm Torn Areas: 7 Dead & Multiple Injuries

STATE & NATIONAL: In reaction to a vicious storm that killed 7 Texans, including the 2 and 5 year old siblings of one family, Texas Governor Gregg Abbott issues a statement in regard to the state's response to the inclement storm system that ravaged the state of Texas for 2 weeks. "The one thing that remains flapping in the wind and that's the flag of the United States of America. I'm proud of America and our state for coming together at times like these." Governor Abbott asked that everyone take the time to say a prayer for everyone who is in harms way. The Gover stressed the matter of helping rebuild the lives of those who have been greatly suffered by the storm. On Monday, May 27th, Governor Gregg Abbot held a press conference during which he announced the state's declaration of disaster in 110 Texas counties. Abbott commented that the declaration of disaster had been issued prior to the May 27th date as the storm system traveled through Texas for an extended time period. Governor Abbott has set up a website for Texans to report damages. Please refer to the following website: damage.tdem.texas.gov In Texas, over the Memorial Day weekend, a string of tornadoes struck in rural areas of the state. The Memorial Day weekend storm that killed 7 people added to the death toll that has transpired over the past weeks that 96 tornadoes have occurred in the state of Texas. Cooke County Judge, John Roane, stated that he watched from his home on Lee Street as tornadoes destroyed structures nearby. Judge Roane added that it was only prayer that prevented the tornadoes from "crushing" he and his family. Governor Abbott reported the destruction of 200 houses and 120 structures that were destroyed as the tornadoes struck upon buildings in their path. Abbott added, "I'll be shocked if those numbers are not increased as further assessments are made." Cooke County Emergency Management coordinator, Ray Fletcher, commented in regard to the efforts that will be needed to be made by everyone coming together. Governor Abbott commented that a 2nd round of searches will be made in addition to the response by FEMA to address matters of disaster to a minimum of 800 homes that have limited to zero insurance. The state of Texas will be engaged in efforts to ensure the recovery of the 110 Texas counties that have been affected by the recent storms.
