"Freedom is never truly won.  You earn it and win it in every generation.” -- Coretta Scott Kiing ; wife a slain Civil Rights Leader, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King

NATION: On January 15 in the state of South Carolina, Vice President Kamala Harris, delivered a speech before the gathering of participants in the birthday holiday celebration of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King. .

By Michelle Crawford-Sapenter

"Generation after generation, on the fields of Gettysburg, in the schools of Little Rock, on the grounds of this state house, on the streets of Ferguson, and on the floor of the Tennessee House of Representatives, we the people have always fought to make the promise of freedom real. " -- US Vice President Kamala Harris

Vice President Harris spoke with faith in the American idea commenting that "...the true power behind the promise of America is in the faith of her people."

Harris spoke in regard to the years of chording the chasm that has distanced millions in America from an equally appointed and , therefore, equally deserved right to freedom. Harris stated that whike millions have fullfilled Dr King's dream , there we have, yet, to cash in on the promissory note.

"Dr. King’s voice rang out when he, said... '“We refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt.”' Vice President Harris commented, further, “So, we’ve come to cash this check...“a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.” -- Vice President Kamala Harris

Today, perhaps, on a different plain, a different level of existence, it is evident that while tge struggle for equality persists, Harris stated, "...we must continue the fight."

It was 60 years ago, Harris indicated, that Dr King spoke before thousands upon thousands Iof Americans in Washington DC-- it was then that Dr King made clear reference to the uncashed "promissory note" given to the American people through the statutes of the Declaration of Independence.

"Freedom is fundamental to the promise of America.  Freedom is not to be given.  It is not to be bestowed.  It is ours by right. And in many ways, the story of America has been a story of our fight to realize that promise."-- US Vice President Kamala Harris

The Vice President commented in regard to the stand taken by Dr King as he, along with others, endured the plight that accompanied the fight against racism and racial inequality. Harris stated how Dr King lived his life in a manner to bring about the decency that accompanies peace and the dignity deserved by every American as he "...moved minds, hearts, and feet..." and, ultimately, laid down his life as he continued with a plan to achieve the future hope for prosperity to be had by way of the realization of the promise given --that which , in America, provides for an inherent freedom and equality.

"They pass laws to ban drop boxes, limit early voting, and restrict absentee ballots."-- Vice President Kamala Harris

While, during his fight to win freedom, Dr King stated that " The goal of America is freedom," US Vice President Harris declared onevtruth-- that freedom in America is under threat. Vice President Harris cited the ongoing attacks. On voting, attacks that deny voters the right to receive water and foods while awaiting a chance to vote, attacks on women's rights to choose .

"Fundamental freedoms under assault: freedom from fear, violence, and harm; freedom to vote, to live, to learn, to control one’s own body; and the freedom to simply be." Vice President Kamala Harris

Harris stated the fact that in our nation gge attacks are ongoing and are made ahmgsinst Americanisms right to be who that want to be while racial extremists attempt to remove historical fact, Harris referred to them as tge "ugly..." points in history as a means of falsifying truth and weakening the education of American students.

"That from kindergarten to 12th grade, this young generation has had to endure active-shooter drills."-- Vice President Kamala Harris

On the annual day of tge butch and holiday of Dr Martin Luther King, Vice President Harris expressed one of the most widely held impression involving freedom--that, today, those who were born post Civil Rights Mivement , have now fewer fights than their foreparents. Not to mention the plight of school children about whom the Vice President stated, have faced off, as even one among 50 million student is one too many who have died at tge hand of a random shooter.

Harris stated, even today, as Dr King did 60 years ago, we refuse to believe the bank of justice is bankrupt. So, according to Vice President Harris, it is incumbent upon each of us, as Americans, to take further the steps necessary to cash in on the promissory note that has, now, for centuries, drafted our freedom and eauakity.
