Updated: Jan 31

NATION: In the years of American politics, voting rights have continued to face a firestorm of opposition. Among the first challenges to anti voting rights law occurred in 1964 when the March across Edmund Pettus Bridge led by John R Lewis and followed by 599 black residents resulted in that which America remembers as Bloody Sunday-- the day that the demand for the right to vote by black citizens of Montgomery, Alabama was won after a brutal attack, beating , fire hose spraying, dog attacks and jailing by Selma police officers. Lewis and the 599 were relentless returning to the demand for their tight yo bite was finally won.

Today, a reversal in voting rights appears to have transpired. Today, a state of Tennessee House effort overturned congressional maps further denying the voting rights of 500,000 potential voters.

The state of Tennessee has denied tge right of the half a million voters basing the decision on the results of the redrawing of 2023 congressional maps that impose new restrictions devised by a a majority of Republican state representatives.

The state of Tennessee has imposed new laws that prohibit convicted felons having any right to vote. The new regulations now deny the nearly 500,000 Tennessee redidents the right to vote while, also, declining restoration of the voter registration right after prison release or the end of a sentence.

The new law , however, contends that a convicted felon must have a full pardon from the Governor or have their full rights of citizenship restored to permit their right to possess and own fire arms. Rights must be restored by a judge prior to any restoration of botingvrights eligibility.

The new voting restrictions law affects 21% of black voter and 8% of Hidpanic voters. The report does not inficate any impact agsinst Tennessee's white populations as a result of the new voting restrictions.
