Sweden and Canada Pledge A Plan For Providing Relief To Gaza Refugees

US & GLOBAL: In the wake of violence that has ravaged civilians in Gaza and refugees in Rafah who have sought after retrieving much needed humanitarian aid, the governments of Sweden and Canada resume efforts at providing for refugees, currently facing desolation and desperation in need of foods and other essential supplies as the Israel- Hamas war rages on.

In response to the ongoing Israel-Gaza war, both Sweden and Canada have taken significant steps to alleviate the humanitarian crisis faced by civilians in the region. Here are the key points:

Resuming Aid to UN Agency for Palestinians: Sweden and Canada have decided to resume aid to the cash-strapped UN agency for Palestinians (UNRWA).

The initial disbursement amounts to $20 million. This decision comes after receiving assurances of extra checks on UNRWA’s spending and personnel.

These countries were among those that suspended aid to UNRWA when Israel accused about 12 of its employees of involvement in the Hamas attack that triggered the conflict in Gaza .

UNRWA has agreed to implement measures such as independent audits, strengthened internal supervision, and extra controls of personnel to ensure accountability.

Ahmed Hussen, Canada’s Minister of International Development, emphasized that they take the allegations against some UNRWA staff seriously and will continue to pursue accountability and reforms.

Background on the Conflict: The Hamas attack on Israel in October resulted in approximately 1,160 deaths, mostly civilians.

In response, Israel’s retaliatory operations in the Hamas-controlled Gaza have led to the deaths of more than 30,800 people, primarily women and children.

The amount of aid brought into Gaza by truck has significantly decreased during the five months of war.

UNRWA, with around 30,000 employees, plays a crucial role in providing humanitarian relief in Gaza, where the United Nations has repeatedly warned of looming famine due to the prolonged Israeli bombardment.

While these efforts are commendable, the situation remains dire, and continued international support is crucial for the well-being of civilians affected by the conflict.
