Marjorie Taylor Greene filed a “motion to vacate” in the midst of a House vote on the spending package. This motion aims to remove Speaker Johnson from his position.

The situation mirrors what happened five months ago when the last Republican speaker, Kevin McCarthy, was ousted due to a compromise with Democrats to prevent a federal shutdown. However, this time, Speaker Johnson faces steeper odds, with less GOP support.

The political landscape indicates that Speaker Johnson, representing Louisiana, is at risk of being removed from his position. No speaker had been removed this way until McCarthy’s dramatic ouster last fall, which left the House chamber essentially paralyzed as Republicans scrambled to find a new speaker.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, has warned that she would seek to remove the speaker if he proceeds with a package supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

Johnson, despite refusing to put a $95 billion Senate-passed national security package with Ukraine funds to a House vote, has promised to prioritize funding for Ukraine.

With the narrowest majority in modern times, Speaker Johnson treads carefully. He can afford only a few defectors on any vote, making him vulnerable to removal unless Democrats step in to protect him.

McCarthy’s removal exposed deep divisions within the party, leaving the new Republican majority struggling to function effectively since January. The threat of removal looms over Johnson’s young speakership, and the House is set to leave for a two-week spring recess after Friday’s session.

Marjorie Taylor Greene’s actions reflect the tension within the Republican party, and Speaker Johnson’s fate hangs in the balance as the spending package remains a contentious issue.
