Caroline Meister, a former River Forest woman, was found dead near a hiking trail in central California after being reported missing for four days. The () year old veteran hiker had left a Zen center in Carmel Valley on Monday morning for a hike.
In Monterey County, the search and rescue team discovered her body at the base of a steep waterfall. Meister was described as a very experienced and avid hiker who was very familiar with the area.
Meister had lived in California for about two years and had informed the Zen center staff that she was going to hike a nearby trail that loops back to the center. No foul play was suspected, and an autopsy was pending.
The challenging terrain of the area could have contributed to the incident, as even experienced hikers can encounter slip and falls in steep regions.
The incident involving the death of Caroline Meister is a wake-call to women and men who hike alone, reminding of the risks associated with hiking without a companion even for occasional adventurers.
