[W]e do know is a bridge like this one completed in the 1970s was simply not made to withstand a direct impact on a critical support pier from a vessel that weighs about 200 million pounds, orders of magnitude bigger than cargo ships that were in service in that region at the time that the bridge was first built."-- US DOT Secretary, Pete Buttigieg

Today , as the Baltimore Pport remains closed encompassing the entirety of the Patapsco River, Secretary Buttigieg stated that the federal government will continue its work with Maryland DOT as the rebuilding is carried forth and the reopening of the port is brought to fruition.

"We are committed to delivering every federal resource that’s needed — every federal resource needed to help Maryland get back to normal, and we’re going to work with them every step of the way to rebuild this bridge."-- US DOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg

Buttigieg commented in regard to the activities that trandpured on the bridge and that which was the apparent cause. According to the barge crew members, the vessel ; a neopanamax contsiner, lost power and was rendered to a state of malfunction. Immediately following the crash, calls were placed to emergency sites and the response to the call was immediate.

Buttigieg commended response teams and Baltimore Fire Department for their quick response adding their eork to ensure the safety of residents might have saved dozens more lives. The Secretary upheld the requirements developed by the Biden- Harris administration to ensure that the federal government aimed its focus toward the repair and rebuilding of the US infrastructure.

Without knowing the exact condition of standing portions of the bridge, rebuilding the FSK will take time and will not be a job undertaken within a few days or weeks. Buttigieg stated however, that tge rebuilding process eith be funded by tge federal government.
