Israel High Court Lifts Temporary Student Draft Prohibition

US & GLOBAL: On Friday, in Israel the High Court of Justice in Israel has taken a significant step by ordering the government to halt funding for ultra Orthodox yeshivas whose students are eligible for IDF enlistment.

By Anne M Erbynstein

This decision comes after a government resolution from June 2023, which temporarily instructed the IDF not to draft Haredi students despite the expiration of the relevant law governing this matter.

The resolution itself will expire at midnight on March 31st. In the last years, however, the political battle over enlistment has caused tensions within Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition.

National Unity’s Benny Gantz has threatened to leave if the Knesset passes a bill allowing blanket exemptions to remain, even if it satisfies the court.

While the Haredim have stated that they will qui, their plan is a matter that may be conducted if the government fails to pass legislation to prevent the draft.

The expiration of the draft ban may indeed lead to the IDF moving forward with enlisting students in the Israel military, but the situation remains complex and politically charge.
