Trump was found guilty of 34 felonies by a jury composed of 12 Manhattan residents. The charges relate to falsification of business records in an effort to cover up a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

Prosecutors argued that Trump authorized the plan to falsify checks and related records to prevent voters from learning about the alleged sexual encounter with Daniels.

The conspiracy spanned Trump’s 2016 campaign and continued into his first year in the White House.

Trump denied having sex with Daniels and pleaded not guilty.

The verdict was handed down in the same Manhattan courtroom where Trump had been on trial for the past six weeks.

This conviction marks the first time a former U.S. president has ever been tried or convicted in a criminal case. Trump is now also a convicted felon, which could have implications for his political future.

The sentencing date is set for July 11, just four days before the start of the Republican National Convention, where Trump will be formally nominated as the party’s standard-bearer. He could face up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine for each count, but the judge has discretion in imposing the sentence.

The verdict could reverberate across the electorate in the months leading up to the November election. As the presumptive Republican nominee, Trump’s conviction may impact his campaign and public perception.

Republican allies have expressed their displeasure with the guilty verdict. It should be known that the GOP members’ reaction reflects the highly charged political context surrounding Trump’s conviction, and the trial’s outcome has significant implications.

The nation will bare witness to the events that are possibly, yet, to follow as a result of Trump’s conviction as it may be determined by June 11 whether Donald Trump, former US President will be sentenced to a jail term.
