US Supreme Court Upholds 1994 Gun Control Law Blocking Weapons Possession by Domestic Violence Abusers

NATION: Today, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a law intended to provide protection for victims of domestic violence. The Supreme Court voted 8-1 to pass a law that prohibits the possession of firearms by select members ofthe public who have been placed under restraining orders.

On Friday, the US Supreme Court stayed a 30 year old law aiming at ensuring that firearms would not be placed in the hands of violators and abusers of restraining orders that prevent violence against spouses and others within their own homes.


"No one who has been abused should have to worry about their abuser getting a gun."— US President Joe Biden


During the hearings, gun advocates attempted to argue that the 1994 law would block those who have no domestic violence charges against them. Opposing that argument , the Supreme Court, led by Chief Robert’s, replied with comments stating the 1994 would not violate the 2nd Amendment rights of the innocent adding that the law refers to those who are under restraining order involving domestic violence charges.


Today, President Joe Biden agreed with tge Supreme Court indicating that overturning tge 1994 law would resulting in violators having the freedom to resume their acts of domestic violence while possibly using firearms against their spouses.


Most learning about the Supreme Court decision believe that it is a major victory for women and families.
