During a telephoned conversation, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with Russia’s Defense Minister, Andrew Belousov in a matter of talks with Russian leadership that had been avoided since the outbreak of war with Ukraine.

The conversation held on Tuesday would involve an agreement to a prisoner exchange —a matter that had been assisted by United Arab Emirates

According to the agreement, Russia complied with the plan that involved the release of 90 prisoners held by each country and resulted in a reciprocal release of a total of 180 prisoners.

Factors of concern for the US were discussed by Secretary Austin essentially pointing to the current status of Russia’s war with Ukraine. Austin mentioned the need for maintaining open lines of communication between Russian and the United States.

The information, disclosed by US Pentagon spokesperson, Patrick Ryder, did not indicate when the prisoner swap would take place. However, the exchange may indicate that a number of the long awaited prisoner releases from Russian prisons is highly likely.
