Mexican Drug Lords Arrested in Texas Sting Operation


STATE & NATIONAL: On Thursday, Mexican drug Lords, Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada and his former partner, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Lopez were arrested by US authorities in El Paso, Texas. The arrest is a matter of an sting operation conducted by US law enforcement in a plan to intercept the drug trafficking that flows into the U.S. from Mexico.

According to reports, El Mayo has worked with El Chapo while operating as the 2nd in command ofthe Sinaloa Cartel. The U.S. has tracked the activities of Zambada since the arrest and conviction of Chapo in 2017.


Joaquin Guzman Lopez is the son of El Chapo who joined forces with Zambada after the arrest of his king pin father. Zambada and Guzman face a number of felony charges including trafficking the lethal drug fentanyl into the U.S.


The report indicates that associates of Guzman Lopez may have worked with law enforcement to secure information involving the target drug Lord’s activities. Guzman Lopez spoke with Zambada and encouraged his trip to the United States. On Friday, as the Zambada private jet landed, US authorities made the arrest.


According to information gathered on the activities associated with Zambada, the 76 year old has led the Garcia Sinaloa faction of the drug cartel for several decades. Known as El Mayo, Zambada has remained free from capture by law enforcement. His arrest on Friday would represent the first time Zambada would be indicted for drug crimes in the U.S.


The Sinaloa Cartel trafficks drugs to 50 countries around the world including funneling illegal drugs into the United States. In the last 10 years of Sinaloa Cartel drug trafficking is responsible for 70% of the United States’ 107, 000 drug overdose deaths.


According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, a drug related death occurred inthe United States every 4.5 minutes.
