In the city of Dhaka, protests persisted over the last 8 months. Political protests turned to civil unrest reaching the home of Sheikh Hasina Wazed. Unable to curtail the violence, Hasina, now 79 years of age, found it necessary to leave the area in a plan for avoiding attacks against her home and family.

The daughter of former Bangladeshian leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh's "Father of the Nation" During her reign, Hasina Waxed was plagued with the memory of her father’s fate. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated in 1975 along with several members of their family. As a young girl Hasina and her younger sister , then on a visit to India, survived the attack.

Following her return in 1981, Hasina rose to power, however , opposed by a former associate, Begum Khaleda Zia of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), in 2001. Begum Khaleda Zia would become an arch rival and suspect in leading the violence that resulted in Hasina Wazed’s demise.

Hasina Wazed led a government that was pro- democratic. She consistently condemned terrorists, once stating, “…suppress these terrorists with a firm hand.”
