Illinois State Comptroller Susana Mendoza has suspended all "offset" funds to the Village of Dolton due to ongoing reporting failures by Mayor Tiffany Henyard's administration.
In a recent report that followed the investigation conducted, in part, by former Chicago Mayor, Lori Lightfoot, it had been recommended that all municipal funding be suspended.
The recommendation for funding suspension follows an audit conducted by Lightfoot which was meant to determine how $3.65 million dollars had been misappropriated. As a result of the funding mishap, 2 Dolton police officer were charged in response to the apparent lost funds.
The funds that would be routinely received by the city of Dolton, for issues like traffic tickets, are being withheld because the village failed to submit required financial reports, including an annual financial report, a financial audit, and Tax Increment Financing District (TIF) reports
An audit revealed significant financial mismanagement under Mayor Henyard's leadership. The village's general fund has a deficit of $3.65 million, and there have been numerous questionable expenses, such as large purchases on Amazon and Wayfair
Mayor Henyard is also dealing with a power struggle within the Dolton Police Department. He yard has instructed officers to follow orders from her appointed police chief, despite opposition from trustees
The matters at issue involving the 2 police officer's accused of mishandling municipal funds have created a challenging environment for Dolton's administration and residents.
Today, in Illinois, the matter is being directly addressed by Mayor Tiffany Henyard and others within the Dolton, Illinois city authority.
