Congo Africa Prison-Break Results In 129 Deaths & Multiple Injuries



US & GLOBAL: Reports from the Congo , Africa provide information involving the recent events that cite an attempted jailbreak at Makala Central Prison in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The report indicates that the attempted prison break resulted in a tragic loss of life.

Today, in the Vongo, Africa, the report made in regard to the MCP jailbreak rindicated that it was as a result of the attempted prison break that the death toll rose to, at least, 129 people. The Makala Central Prison official’s report included ingormation involving the injuries of hundreds as the news disclosed details associating the most fatalities occurring due to a stampede.


According to the most recent report, Makala Central Prison inthe Congo erupted in gunfire as 24 inmates, attempting to flee the prison, were shot dead by “warning” gunshots. The number of injuries quickly rose to 59 and, in some cases, reports were made of women in the prison being raped and seriously injured.


Subsequent reports were made stated the cause of the overwhelming death toll indicating that numerous fatalities occurred during the escape attempt that was plotted from inside the prison by inmates in one of the wings.


Prisons in the Congo have encountered historical overcrowding. The Makala Central Prison is designed to hold 1,500 inmates, however, housed over 12,000 at the time of the incident, The Congo prison’s tragedy highlights the severe overcrowding and dire conditions in the prison system.


Today, authorities continue their investigation of the incident and have promised measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.


Following the news iftge prison break travesty that initially involving dozens of prisoners, there have been several reactions from officials who spoke in regard to the incident at Makala Central Prison.


On Tuesday, Congolese Interior Minister Jacquemin Shabani confirmed the death toll and mentioned that 24 inmates were shot dead by guards as they tried to escape. Shabani, also, confirmed the cases involving reports of women being raped during the chaos.


Justice Minister Constant Mutamba described the incident as a “premeditated act of sabotage” and promised a stern response to those responsible. Mutamba, also, announced a ban on the transfer of inmates from the prison and plans to build a new facility to address overcrowding.


The Congolese government’s has stated its commitment to investigating the incident and taking measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
