In the city of New York, council members are working to transition migrants out of the shelter system and humanitarian emergency response centers to more cost-effective shelters.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that $1.9 billion will be allocated from the state’s budget, with an additional $500 million from state reserves, totaling $2.4 billion to manage the migrant crisis.

Today, legislative proposals have been made by state lawmakers who are proposing tax hikes and expanding the right to shelter mandate to ensure every county in New York houses migrants.

New York has indicated the plan for making adjustments in federal and state aid. Mayor Eric Adams is appealing for more state and federal aid to cover the projected $12 billion cost of the migrant crisis by July 2025.

The decisions by Mayor Adams aim at balancing fiscal responsibility while addressing the humanitarian needs of migrants.
