Speaker Jeffries Comments In Regard To Justice Alito & The Request by Congress For His Recusal From The Jan 6 Insurrection

Updated: May 26

NATION: House Minority Speaker, Hakeem Jeffries spoke today in regard to Samuel Alito's appearance of or actual act of impartiality toward the violent insurrection. Jeffries stated that the matter complicates an already complex situation between the House and the US Supreme Court whose Republican lean Justices out number Democrats. "In no circumstance where Justice Samuel Alito should be permitted to preside with respect to any case that has to do with the January 6 violent insurrection..."--Minority Leader, Speaker Hakeem Jeffries By Michelle Crawford-Sapenter Jeffries called for an enforceable ethical code of conduct, such that he stated the Justice Department o\and the Senate have agreed is of utmost and urgent necessity. According to Jeffries, the existing code is appears to be only voluntary and is, for the most part, ignored. "Justice Clarence Thomas has lost his credibility in terms of an impartial figure as someone who was interested in the principles of liberty."--Minority Leader, Hakeem Jeffries Jeffries commented that Congress will engage in a conversation involving the need for the establishment of an ethical and enforceable code of conduct. The senior House legislator commented that the Supreme Court is the one branch of government that has the ability to operate with impunity adding, even congress has an ethical code enforceable by law. Everything we care about is going to be onthe ballot. Jeffries stated, further, that every branch of government--the executive branch, included--has an ethical code of conduct that is enforceable by law. The Congressman stated that these events that find the Supreme Court being conducted under such circumstances that matters of contention that are handled by the Justices do not cause the 9 members to adhere to a code of ethics. Jeffries stated that, in regard to the voluntarily approached and/or ignored code of ethical conduct, he sees no non-nefarious nor innocent explanation for the conduct of justices. Currently, the MAGA majority House has not expressed any interest in executing an oversight. As the House Minority, Jeffries is aware of the problems that face the US public, particularly, in regard to the stand that may be taken by the Supreme Court on issues that are of great concern to the public. Jeffries mentioned that there is a great proclivity that, if Roe v Wade can be slammed by the Supreme Court, then so can Brown v Board of education, Social Security along with Medicare, Affordable Care and Democracy. The court, Jeffries says, has degraded public confidence in the institution. Congress and Democrats are facing a point of encouraging the faith of the public in regard to who is elected in the US Senate and who they elect as US President. Jeffries stated that the loss of faith in the Supreme Court may be a pivotal factor in the November election. While the Supreme Court has reached a stay involving the Insurrection--a stay, MSNBC legal analyst, Andrew Weisman stated, has been executed by the Supreme Court. In his inquiry to Jeffries, Weisman stated, that it is Thomas and Alito who are holding the stay and avoiding moving further ahead and are hashing out their dissent. Weisman stated that neither Alito nor Thomas should be sitting on the court. Jeffries responded by commenting in regard to the American people and those the public sends to Washington in the Senate and House adding that these elections make the greatest difference in how the pressure is imposed on the Supreme Court and the question of any code of ethics. Jeffries stated, also, that despite the fact that democracy is currently represented in the minority in the House, it will be necessary to "...use every tool available to get truth put forth."
