US Senate Seats Adm. Franchetti, First Woman To Head US Navy

NATION: On Friday, the US Senate racks up a victory, overstepping the hope and plans laid out in a dispute made by Senator Tuberville. In the most recent efforts made by the US Department of Defense in regard to clearing 400 new officials, Tuberville vehemently opposed the efforts made by defense stating thatan individual appraisal of candidates should be made. Today, given the seating of the firts woman to head the department of the US Navy, Admiral Lisa Franchetti joins the US Senate in harnessing her appointment as a victory. By Michelle Crawford-Sapenter Today, the US Senate entered into a vote to determine the outcome of an appointed Department pof Defense official. Admiral Lisa Franchettis had faced being interviewed by the US Senate, at some point. Today, Franchetti was confirrmed as the next US Navy Chief becoming the first female to gain full control of the any US Defense Department division. Franchetti won the bid for the position nby a vote of 95-1. In a second situation involving one of the next to be confirmed, the Senate now looks at Christopher Mahoney who is in line for becoming the next US commandant , 2nd in command in the US Air Force. US General Christopher Mahoney is expected to be confirmed by the Seante and is likely to assume the seat that may be vacated by the ailing incumbent, Air force General Eric Smith. Should Mahoney be confirmed by the US Senate, General Smith will be relieved of one of the positions he took over earlier in the year. On Friday, the US Senator interviewed more than 60 of the 400 candidates nominated for assuming a higher ranking role within the US military. The members of the Seante unrelentingly conducted interviews with those who were present during today's Senate session. Currently, all 400 have yet to be confirmed by the Senate. Today, Senator Chuck Schumer commented in regard to the actions taken by Senator Tuberville during the confirmation of the 60 interviewed by Senate members. Schumer stated that the Senate "tried to confiirm ..." as many of the nominees as possible however, the efforts made by the Senate were intercepted by the rebuffing statements made by Tuberville. Schumer commented, "Last night, Republican Senators tried to confirm many of our military nominees They tried for four hours, but Senator Tuberville brazenly stood there objecting." In reference to the efforts made by the Senate at bypassing Tuibervilles' blatant and across the board blockade, Senatior Schuumer stated that the Senate had, already , received clearance resulting from a resolution introduced by Senator Reed. While it is known that Senator Tuberville's objections to the blanket 400 confirmations is directly associated with the new abortion statutes passed by the Department earlier in the year, the Senate will likely conti nue itsa conformation hearings in the weeks that follow.
